"Palm-Lined Promenade on the Baie des Anges"
Nice curves along the Baie des Anges, where the Promenade des Anglais runs for miles above the pebble beach. Behind it, the old town (Vieux Nice) is a maze of ochre lanes, markets, and socca stands, and Castle Hill looks back over the rooftops and the bay. Trains make Monaco, Èze, and Antibes simple day trips. It is pricier than inland France, and it shines in late spring and early fall.
Promenade des Anglais, Vieux Nice, Castle Hill (Colline du Château), Cours Saleya market, Marc Chagall Museum, day trips to Èze, Monaco, or Antibes
May–June & September–October
Beaches are pebbles, not sand; use the tram and regional trains instead of taxis along the coast
