ABOUT

Fes el-Bali, the old medina, is a labyrinth of more than 9,000 car-free lanes alive with craftsmen, souks, and mosques. The Chouara Tannery's dye pits have been in use for centuries, the University of al-Qarawiyyin is considered one of the world's oldest, and the Bou Inania and Al-Attarine madrasas show stunning tilework and carved cedar. The blue-tiled Bab Bou Jeloud gate marks the entrance, while riad stays, rooftop terraces, and day trips to Roman Volubilis and Meknes complete the visit.
